A couple of my latest series dealing with the mind's eye...
These take a long time to draw. I usually work on them between layers on my paintings- when my paint is drying. I use rapidograph pens filled with ink. Just saw this on Artsonia! Way to go wonderful WMS students! I couldn't be prouder of the work you do! I adore every mark you make :) Sometimes more than you do yourself :) So much is happening for me this summer! Summer is such a great time to rejuvinate and connect with other artists. Summer consists of Art Shows going up and coming down, visit to DIA, connecting with #jxnartteachers and Jackson Entrepreneurs! Busy! Follow me on instagram and twitter to get a glimpse into this artist's life! Links in top right corner of my weebly home page. I'm currently showing at Art 634. August 2nd I will be showing at In Good Company Restaurant Art Gallery. Looking forward to a visit to Meijer Garden next week with #jxnartteachers! Tonight my good friend Mary Sprague is showing her fish paintings at In Good Company! Be sure to see them, they are fab!
Why does every school year seem to go faster?!
I think last week was the fastest week of my life! I was especially sad to have the 8th grade go on to High School this year. They are the most wonderful group. The High School is lucky to get them! I will miss them! Here is my last art class newsletter of the year:
Fantastic end to a Fantastic Year! from Mrs. Garnett #room711wmsart
Opening reception for MAAC show at St. Joseph Box Factory last night. Cara curated the show! Go see the exceptional artwork! Loved so many pieces! Don't miss "Grin and Bear it" , "Beauty from Ashes", "Hanging On", Mineral Beast" and so much more! Please check out my "Snowscape" diptych! Especially for my Ella Sharp group:
What a pleasure it is to teach a class with such cool ladies! I am loving getting to know you! Such interesting people with interesting things going on! So much to write and draw about in your journals. Last week we talked about the color wheel and experimented a bit with pencils, craypas, and chalk. Remember that complementary colors are your friends when it comes to color! They can add so much to a sketch journal page! You can really make a color pop by surrounding it with it's complement. This Thursday I want to talk a bit about the look of your writing, and give you some ideas for lettering. I can't wait to see your journal pages! Keep creating! Here are a couple of Pinterest boards for you to snoop around in if you have time :) for sketch journal: https://www.pinterest.com/julia360/sketchjournal/ for zentangles: https://www.pinterest.com/julia360/zentangle/ This class is composed of the coolest bunch of women! Love the drawing, love the conversation, love the laughter and camaraderie! I am inspired weekly by each of you, and what you bring to the class. This week we talked a bit about composition. We touched on the following:
Reminder: The homework this week is to create a still life composition that tells a story about a particular person. Choose someone near and dear to you and select items that you feel represent that person in some way. My example was a composition I painted of my two grandmas that included items from their dressing tables. I had forgotten that I did 2 of them... When I went to find the image for this post I found the 2nd one too :) Nice surprise for me. They are paintings, but it is the same compositional idea for a drawing. I'm excited to see your drawings this week! Someone will be very honored that you chose to draw a still life about them.
Sadly, next week will be our last week! I hope this class has inspired you to make a habit of drawing, and has given you a few new skills to practice. I also hope you will consider taking another class from me in the future, or another Ella Sharp class! Here is the info for the next class: http://ellasharpmuseum.org/ Sketch Journaling 6 Thursdays: April 9, 16, 23, 30 May 7, 14 6:30—8:30 p.m. Instructor: Julia Garnett Cost $96 / Member $75 Create a personal visual diary while exploring a variety of media such as colored pencil, pen, marker, embroidery, and watercolor. Learn lettering, layout, and color theory. Supply list provided. Happy creating everyone! Great class again! Drawing can be so relaxing! It's a wonderful way to unwind after a hectic day. Of course it's always great to draw in a group and chat, that always makes it all the more fun. This week we drew baskets so we could continue working on form, and shading. Now we are adding texture. The overlapping of the weaving is a challenge. Remember to get the basic shapes first. Sketch them in lightly. Next, start shading to establish form. Use your value scale to make sure you cover a full range of values. Small details come later. For more practice at home, take time to draw overlapping objects this week. Set up a still life with 3 overlapping objects that are larger than 2 feet. For instance, a lamp, a chair, and a blanket. Try to find objects with interesting textures. Drawing takes time, so don't rush anything. Relax and enjoy the process. Try to sit in a comfortable spot with plenty of light. Put on some music, and enjoy your favorite drink while you draw. Make this a good experience that you look forward to. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with! You are doing such a great job in this class! I love seeing your progress. See you Next week! Julia What a great class! I am so impressed with the progress you are making. Everyone did the homework! A+! Hooray!
I could see the care you are taking to put into practice the skills that we have gone over. Your work on the elipse, form, symmetry, and shading is great. Bravo for you! Tonight we worked on the value scale. I want to encourage you to have at least 8 value changes in your still life pictures. Hold the value scale up to the still life, and to your drawing and check your work. Do you have enough darks and lights, or is your entire picture in the midtones? Remember to stand back and look at your work from a distance. Do you have enough contrast? Homework this week is to find objects that are all white and set up a still life. You might want to light it to exaggerate the shadows and add drama. Really notice the value changes and gradations. Draw the still life concentrating on value this week. Notice shapes, curved lines, and angular lines. Extra credit for practicing shading basic forms, and "tornados". :) For class next week bring one object to include in a still life. We will discuss arrangement and composition. You are a great class! It is such a pleasure to be with you each week. See you next Thursday. Welcome back ladies! It was great seeing you this week! Drawing takes practice. I was so impressed that you did your homework! You did an awesome job. Every mark you make is an extension of yourself. Be proud of every little bit of drawing you do. We are all learning and growing together. You are making this class interesting and challenging by the effort you put in and the questions you ask. Thanks for being wonderful! In review, we went over a few ideas to keep in mind when you are drawing a still life.
Homework this week! Draw a still life that has to do with food. Get creative! Make your composition an open design. I can't wait to see what you come up with! The more you draw the better you draw! Explore and find more information on this pinterest board: http://www.pinterest.com/julia360/still-life-class/ I'll see you next week. I hope the weather is good! Have a great weekend. |
